Road to the NPL Grand Final: Lions FC

Playing outside the National Premier Leagues just 12 months ago, Lions FC are now on the cusp of capping a superb season with the ultimate prize.

The storied Queensland side will contest the NPL Finals Series Grand Final against South Australian outfit Campbelltown City at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre on Sunday.

Their journey to the decider has been one of a club meeting its sizeable potential.

Every match in the NPL 2018 Finals Series will be streamed LIVE on www.nationalpremierleagues.com.au as well as via the official Hyundai A-League Facebook page (www.facebook.com/aleague).

The former National League Soccer participants stepped up to an expanded NPL Queensland in 2018 and immediately adjusted, winning 23 of 26 matches to finish seven points clear in first.

They made it a double by dramatically edging Olympic FC in extra-time of the local decider and can now complete the set.

OPPONENTS: Campbelltown City's road to the NPL Grand Final

A watertight defence that was breached just 11 times during the regular season has set the platform for success and made the difference in their first NPL Finals Series assignment.

Marek Madle, scorer of the winner against Olympic, notched in the fourth minute against Edgeworth Eagles and it was all that was required to book a Semi Final berth.

More stubborn resistance came in the form of a 10-man Heidelberg United, who pushed the match to penalties after Sean Ellis cancelled out Nathan Shepherd's opener.

HAND OF BOREAN: Keeper leads Lions into Grand Final

There, a hero emerged: goalkeeper Luke Borean saved two spot-kicks and converted his own to send Warren Moon's men into their second Grand Final of the season.

Given it was Adelaide United that knocked them out of the FFA Cup Round of 16 last month, Lions might just have an extra incentive to get one back on South Australian opposition as they seek to become the first Queensland club to lift the trophy.
