NPL QLD Women’s All-Stars upset Roar

The NPL Queensland Women’s All Stars delivered a stunning upset as honours were split with Brisbane Roar in their double header on Saturday.

The Women’s All-Stars triumphed 2-1 over their Westfield W-League opponents – with Logan Lightning’s Shea Connors striking a goal in each half to secure the win at Dolphins Stadium.

The Roar bounced back in the second match, with Warren Moon’s A-League side securing a comfortable 5-2 win over the Men’s All-Stars.

The matches are part of Football Queensland’s Kappa Festival of Football, which concludes this weekend when the Queensland sides tackle New South Wales at Perry Park.

NPL Queensland Women's All-Stars v Brisbane Roar Highlights

The NPL Queensland All-Stars claimed early bragging rights in the double header with a solid 2-1 win over the Roar's Westfield W-League stars.

Both sides spurned chances to truly test the goalkeepers for much of the first half before Connors delivered the breakthrough shortly prior to the break - Eastern Suburbs FC's Tegan Riding delivering teeing up the attacker with a pin-point squaring ball.

It took less than a minute into the second stanza for Connors to strike again as she tucked away a cheeky toe-poke in the box as the Roar defence failed to shut down her initially heavy touch.

The two-goal deficit spurred the Roar into action, but they failed to capitalise on their chances, while Connors was denied a hat-trick for the All Stars by the offside flag.

The Roar ultimately found consolation with ten minutes remaining through Georgia Beaumont, however the All-Stars steadied in the closing stages to close out a memorable win.

NPL Queensland Men's All-Stars v Brisbane Roar Highlights

It was a different story for the NPL Queensland Men as they failed to replicate their fellow All-Stars heroics - succumbing to a 5-2 defeat.

The Roar threatened from the get-go and delivered a quick-fire double shortly after the quarter hour through off-season signing Joey Champness - a product of NPL Queensland club Moreton Bay United - and Scott McDonald.

Champness then struck twice more either side of the half-hour mark to secure his hat-trick, while McDonald also struck again to put the match beyond reach of the All-Stars before the break.

The second stanza proved more rewarding for the All-Stars as Hayden Mchenery pulled a goal back with a sharp finish on the turn shortly after the restart, while a Roar own goal approaching the hour concluded the scoring.
