PS4 NPL Tasmania Round 3 Review

Four first half goals from Tyler Fischer fired the Devonport Strikers to a 5-3 victory over the Kingborough Lions in a wild game at Lightwood Park.

Fabulous Fischer fires Strikers past Lions

The American struck four times in the first half as his Strikers side went into the sheds with a 4-1 lead and the game seemingly in hand before they were forced to survive a spirited second half fightback from the Lions.

The Lions started brightly in what quickly developed into an open game, flowing from end to end. Benny Kovadio came close to opening the scoring with a backheel that just went wide but it was Devonport who would open the scoring. Tyler Fischer scoring his first of the day, stepping up to dispatch a stunning free kick into the top corner of the net from around 25 yards out. He took it before the Lions could set a wall but even if they had one, it was so well hit that it probably would not have mattered.

Zebras punish South errors to go top

The Hobart Zebras defeated South Hobart 3-0 to go top of the table on Friday Night. After a tentative opening from the Zebras that saw them under immense pressure, a goal from Luke Huigsloot and a brace from Matt Sanders was enough to see the Zebras home.

It was a tight opening couple of minutes to the game that was played at a lightning pace. After the first few minutes South worked their way on top of the Zebras and started to create havoc. Alex Walter was particularly dangerous and took the fight right up to the usually unflappable Jayden Hey. Numerous times inside the first 25 minutes, Walter beat Hey and played the ball into dangerous areas only for the ball to be cleared away at the last second. Hey then took the honours for the rest of the half, going on some scintillating runs from full back and also started to find a way to break even in his battles with Walter defensively. Unfortunately for South Hobart, Walter, who had probably been South’s best, was subbed at half time with a suspected broken wrist.

Stellar Sklenar sees Warriors home over Rangers

Jakub Sklenar was the hero as the Olympia Warriors earned another three points to keep in touch with the competition leaders. The Warriors dispatched a plucky Northern Rangers outfit 4-2 on a delightful afternoon at Warrior Park.

The opening 20 minutes was a rather dour affair. Olympia held possession for large periods of time, and often played the ball side to side rather than making an incisive plays through the middle with a forward pass. The Rangers were the reverse of the Warriors during this time period, pushing forward extremely quickly when they did have possession.

Reds rally past City

A second half fightback helped Clarence United chalk up their first victory of the 2017 NPL TAS season as they recovered from a 1-0 half time deficit to defeat Launceston City 2-1 in their home opener.

It was Launceston City who started the sharper of the two sides with Linger and O’Connor looking particularly lively. They duly took the lead after 11 minutes when O’Connor crossed for Compagne to tap home from close range.
