Watch: Scorpion kick gem, volleyed screamer in NPL

Former Caltex Socceroos stalwart Luke Wilkshire witnessed one of the National Premier League NSW goal of the seasons on debut – unfortunately for him, it was against his Wollongong Wolves side.

Wilkshire, who was a standout for Sydney FC in the Hyundai A-League, returned to his boyhood club and made his debut as a holding midfielder against Sydney Olympic at Belmore Oval as Olympic ran out 5-1 winners.

In a match littered with former Hyundai A-League players – including Justin Pasfield, Nick Montgomery, Chris Payne (all Wolves), Radovan Pavicevic, Riley Woodcock and Nick Tsattalios (all Olympic) – Olympic’s Thomas Whiteside channelled his inner Riley McGree to pull out a scorpion kick goal in the 22nd minute.

Earlier, Pavicevic had made it 1-0 to the hosts inside 15 minutes, before he added another in the closing minutes of the match.

Alejandro Lopez Sanchez also got on the scoresheet twice – in the 65th and 86th minute – while Montgomery scored Wolves’ only goal of the match.

“To be honest, in the second half they were just more clinical than us,” Wolves coach Jacob Timpano told NPL NSW.

“They caught us on the counter three times and we conceded three goals.

“When you cop a couple of world class goals like they scored, it makes it difficult. It’d be nice if they went in for us. It’s a hard one – we lost 5-1 but to be totally honest I think we outplayed them for the best part of the match.”

It wasn’t the only world class goal from around the grounds, with NPL Capital Football also witnessing a brilliant strike in Canberra FC’s 5-0 win over Belconnen United.

Thomas James scored a ripping volley from wide on the right, just inside the box.
