Thwaite's pledge on sealing Gold Coast United return

Ex-Caltex Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite is ready to share his experience after reuniting with Kristian Rees at former club Gold Coast United.

Thwaite has re-joined the side he formerly skippered in the Hyundai A-League to provide a professional edge to next season's NPL Queensland assault.

The 35-year-old's return required little convincing from one-time defensive partner Rees, who was appointed head coach last month.

"It's time to give back for both of us," Thwaite said.

"We've both got so much excitement for the future of Gold Coast United.

"Kristian was a leader on the pitch and I'm sure his attributes will see him succeed as a coach.

"I've had a couple of opportunities to go back into the A-League again but this is the best option for my family and I right now."

Thwaite, capped 13 times by Australia, spent last season with Western Sydney Wanderers following stints with Perth Glory and Chinese outfit Liaoning Whowin.

The Brisbane-born Cairns product previously represented Gold Coast between 2009 and 2012 and Rees is confident he has the man to help improve on this season's 10th-place finish.

"Michael brings great experience, he's played all over the country and across the world. He's a great leader and I know what he can offer on the field," the United boss said.

"And just as telling is what he'll bring off it. What he brings in a mentoring capacity is immeasurable.

"He's the consummate professional, the way he prepares for matches both physically and mentally.

"He'll be an inspirational leader on and off the park."
