Talay adds Sydney academy star McGing to Phoenix rebuild

Ufuk Talay has signed another Sydney FC academy prospect for his Wellington Phoenix rebuild, with Liam McGing penning a one-year contract with the New Zealand club.

The 20-year-old defender signs on from NPL NSW club Sutherland Sharks, where he has featured in 16 matches this season.

He joins midfielder and good friend Cameron Devlin - who signed for the Kiwis last week - as two former Sky Blues starlets at Talay's disposal.

McGing made his first professional appearance in Sydney FC's AFC Champions League group stage clash against Kawasaki Frontale in May.

A junior of Sydney United 58, the Australian centre back has been an established regular in the Sky Blues' NPL NSW team for the last three seasons.

"I’m looking forward to coming to Wellington and working hard for a starting spot," McGing told the club website.

"There will be plenty of competition for places but I’m ready to step up and prove myself.

"It’s exciting to be part of the rebuild here at the Phoenix and with so many young, talented players, I think we will be an entertaining team to watch."
