After a short hiatus, football is back on the menu with a tantalising Friday night fixture as second-placed MetroStars take on the reigning champions and perennial challengers Campbelltown.

The hosts continued their hot streak with a sizzling 3-0 win at Cumberland, with smart finishes from Christian Esposito, Hamish Gow and Joshua Mori handing their side a comfortable win and cutting their deficit on City to just one point.

Campbelltown, meanwhile, couldn’t get on the pitch for their match against Sturt due to significant waterlogging, leaving them on the cusp of the top six but just three points behind United with a game in hand.

Cumberland United vs South Adelaide
Venue: A.A. Bailey Reserve
Date: Saturday 7 August 3:00 PM

Two sides enduring lean patches of form face off against one another for a shot at an important three points, as Cumberland host South.

Cumberland’s tough run of results continued last time out, falling to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of high-flyers MetroStars which saw them slide to ninth on the table, just three points clear of Croydon but with a significant goal deficit.

Despite leading 2-0 with 25 minutes to play, South were reeled in by Olympic in their match that finished 2-2, with a beautiful, curled effort from Alexander Rideout that nestled into the far corner a highlight for the Panthers.

A win to the visitors would likely see them reclaim their spot in the league’s top six, while three points to the home side could prove crucial in the scramble to steer clear of the bottom of the table.

Adelaide Comets vs Croydon FC
Venue: SA Athletics Stadium
Date: Saturday 7 August 3:00 PM

What might appear an easy match to predict on paper is more complicated by the form lines of each side, as Comets have failed to win consecutive matches since Round 4 and that Croydon’s five-match unbeaten run belies their position in the drop zone.

Comets were able to keep the heat on the top two with a resounding 3-0 victory over Raiders, with smart finishes from Allan Welsh and Ninko Beric and a fantastic long-range strike into the bottom corner by Scott Nagel sealing all three points.

An unbelievable Luke Klimek shot from distance and a late Foribert Niyonkuru equaliser helped Croydon come from behind twice to claim an important point against United in a 2-2 draw.

With just two points separating Comets from the top of the table and the Kings from safety, both sides will be desperate to claim victory and make their moves further up the table.

Adelaide Comets line-up: 1. Julian Torresan, 3. Manley Barnett, 4. Nathan Dimou, 5. Adam Le Cornu, 6. Jack Bladen, 7. John Karatzas, 8. Ryan Yates, 10. Anthony Mavrolambados, 11. Jayden LoBasso, 12. Sturt Lions vs Adelaide Croatia Raiders
Venue: West Beach Parks Football Centre
Date: Saturday 7 August 3:00 PM

Tomorrow afternoon presents an interesting matchup between two sides separated by four positions on the ladder, but sitting just three points and goal difference apart

A waterlogged pitch meant that Sturt’s fixture against Campbelltown had to be rescheduled, but the Lions did have something to cheer about this week upon the announcement of Adelaide United legend Michael Marrone signing for the club.

Raiders will have been disappointed last time out that they were unable to back up their win over Blue Eagles, stumbling to a 3-0 loss to Comets to sit just two points clear of the bottom two.

With a chance to put further distance between themselves and the chasing pack, Sturt will be keen to claim all three points here, while Raiders continue to peer over their shoulders at Croydon.

Adelaide Olympic vs Adelaide Blue Eagles
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Saturday 7 August 6:00 PM

With just one loss in their last 11 matches, Olympic have established a reputation as a tough side to break down, a challenge which Blue Eagles will fancy themselves up for.

Olympic came from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw with South, with an inch-perfect assist for Fausto Erba by Ioannis Simosis and an 89th-minute equaliser from Kristin Konstandopoulos despite having gone down to ten men.

Blue Eagles were mightily impressive in picking up an unlikely point against ladder leaders City in their match that finished 0-0, their first clean sheet of the season and just their third draw up to this stage.

Although they don’t have much to show for it in the way of points, Blue Eagles’ form has improved in recent weeks, so this match is shaping as one between two stubborn, solid teams.

Adelaide Olympic line-up: 1. Lewis Moss (GK), 2. Samuel Dweh, 4. Benkert Abdija, 5. Michael Cittadini, 6. Kristin Konstandopoulos, 7. Jacob Jones, 8. Jason Konstandopoulos, 9. Christos Pounendis, 10. Adelaide United vs Adelaide City
Venue: Jack Smith Park
Date: Saturday 7 August 7:30 PM

Another big fixture for Round 16 sees ladder leaders City pay a visit to an exciting United outfit under lights at Jack Smith part tomorrow night.

Fancy footwork and a smart finish from Nestor Irankunda wasn’t enough to claim victory for the Young Reds as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Croydon after conceding a late equaliser.

City were unable to break down Blue Eagles in their last outing and were forced to share the points at 0-0 in their top versus bottom clash, a result which saw both MetroStars and Comets gain ground on them.

It’s first versus fourth as both sides look to further cement themselves at the right end of the table, with United aiming to move within a point of their opponents and City to increase their gap on the rest of the challenging pack.

Adelaide United FC line-up: Nestor Irankunda, Ethan Alagich, Kane Vidmar, Bernardo Oliveira, Adam Leombruno, Steven Hall, Nicholas Pedicini, Joseph Macheda, Musa Toure, Fergus Lynch, 14. Binyam Kebede, 36. Noah Mcnamara, 37. Keshav Shrestha, 39. Arbi Mollas, 40. Ethan Cox (GK)
