PS4 NPL Tasmania Round 5 Review

Striker Brayden Mann stuck a dagger into his former club as he scored the winner to help Devonport inflict South Hobart's first loss of the season.

Mann returns to haunt South Hobart

An 85th minute goal to Brayden Mann helped Devonport upset South Hobart on their home turf and consign them to their first defeat of the season.

The striker finished coolly after being set up by a composed cut back from Joel Stone to steal a famous 1-0 victory for the Strikers, built on another rock solid defensive display.

In a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, a staunch rearguard from the visitors, similar to that which they produced against Olympia in round 2 contrived to blunt what had previously been a red hot South Hobart attack.

They were denied space in the final third and struggled to get through a side led superbly by Joseph Zupo and Kieran Mulraney in the heart of the defence. They dealt with the physicality of Lesczysnki and coped well with the myriad of attacking weapons that South Hobart possess.

Mearns magic lifts Warriors past Rangers

Reigning champions Olympia collected a hard fought three points on the road away at Northern Rangers in a match which swung back and forth until the final minutes when Nick Mearns bobbed up to seal a dramatic come from behind victory. The midfielder’s 91st minute header completed a magnificent hat-trick, as his side came from 2-1 down in the second half to win 3-2.

Rangers have had a torrid start to their season conceding over five goals per game on average while garnishing just a solitary point.  Prior to the game expectations of this match ranged from a steely low scoring draw to an Olympia goal fest.

City bounce back with comfortable win over Clarence

Launceston City bounced back from their heavy defeat last week to South Hobart in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon at Mitsubishi Park, defeating Clarence United 5-0 in their round 5 PS4 NPL Tasmania clash.

It was the visitors who started the brightest and Clarence had two good chances in the space of a few minutes, both opportunities falling to the influential Paul ‘Billy’ Bremner.  In the 14thminute Andrew Robb sent in a perfect out swinging corner from the right and Bremner leapt to meet it but sent his header over the bar.  Then in the 16th minute Grant Malcolm sent in a teasing delivery from a free kick and Bremner met it at the back post with a diving header but it went wide of the left hand post.

Zebras Move Top Thanks to Huigsloot and McKeown

The Hobart Jeep Zebras are three points clear at the top of the PS4 National Premier Leagues Tasmania table after a narrow and at times uninspiring 2-1 win over the Kingborough Lions at KGV this afternoon. Champion sides grind out wins when they aren’t playing their best football however, so perhaps this is something the Zebras can point to in their chase for silverware this year.

Luke Huigsloot was the star for the victors, scrapping determinedly in a game winning first half, and laying off two goals for Adam McKeown. Mattias Toghill also put in a solid stint at full back for the Zebras whilst Mark Grace and Shane Cartwright were the Lions’ best players on the day.
