PS4 NPL Tasmania Round 1 Review

After the season opener on Friday night, Round 1 of PlayStation 4 NPL Tasmania concluded with a triple header at KGV Football Park.

South Hobart outclass Warriors

Olympia Warriors FC coach Glenn McNeil has given a blistering account of his team after Friday night’s 6-3 loss to South Hobart, calling for certain players in his side to ‘wake up to themselves’.

It was a match where South Hobart’s class shone through, while Olympia’s boom recruits failed to meet lofty expectations.

South drew blood quickly, taking the lead within 10 minutes through a perfectly placed Nick Morton strike from 18 yards. Winger Darcy Hall had beaten his marker Zac Drake and squared the ball to the goal scorer.

South continued to dominate the contest and very nearly found another goal through defender turned midfielder Daniel Brown, who had two shots on goal cleared off the line by Olympia defenders.

Just after the half hour mark Olympia found an equaliser against the run of play. Captain Jake Vandermey headed home at the back post from a free kick to give his side some hope.

Morton was to have the last say of the half, scoring his and South’s second goal, giving his side a well deserved 2-1 lead at half time.

City, Strikers and Zebras victorious in opening round triple header

The first match of a huge Saturday of action saw Launceston City overcome a one-nil half time deficit to defeat Kingborough Lions 3-1.

City were dealt a huge blow before the start of the match, with their play maker Dom Rossi ruled out with an ankle injury. However their players lifted, especially Carlo Coppari and Isaac Degetto who lead their second half turnaround.

The northerners were unlucky in the first 20 minutes to not take the lead, with Coppari and Degetto both hitting the woodwork. Those near misses stung even more when it was Kingborough Lions who opened the scoring through a well taken header from Daniel Gofton in the 29th minute. A goal that gave the Lions a 1-0 lead, that they took into the break.

In the second stanza, Launceston City began to show their dominance and a great solo run and goal from Angus McDonnell drew City level with the Lions. From there it was black and white dominance as City run over the top of Kingborough. In the 75th minute, Greg Duffy found Jervis Foley who scored with his head to give City a valuable lead. The game was then put beyond doubt when Foley secured a brace in stoppage time to ice a tremendous come from behind victory from City.
