Moreton Bay United coach Adam Piddick has called on attacker Charles Mendy to build on his match-winning performance against Edgeworth FC in coming weeks.
Frenchman Mendy was instrumental in Jets 3-1 win over the Eagles in Saturday night’s PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Elimination Final - scoring the opening goal just prior to half-time before setting up two more in the second half.
Piddick said he was pleased with Mendy’s showing against the Northern New South Wales side, but called on the enigmatic forward to maintain his efforts as Jets seek to claim the title as Australia’s best club outside the Hyundai A-League.
“He’s frustrating. It’s good to have him in the squad but he could be doing so much better,” a candid Piddick said post-match.
“That’s a challenge for him coming into these next couple of games. He needs to stand-up and be noticed.”
Prior to joining Jets, Mendy played in a host of European leagues including France, Romania, Bulgaria and Norway.
Piddick further suggested that if Mendy maintains his form, he could well come to the attention of professional clubs in the Hyundai A-League.
“If he plays to a team structure and does what he does best - create, take players on - then with a bit of luck someone might pick him up,” Piddick concluded.
Mendy scored his tenth goal of the 2015 campaign last night to take his PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues career tally to 32 since joining the Jets last year.
He said he believed he was now finding his feet since switching to a wider role under Piddick this season.
“I used to score a lot last year but now it is a different position. But I like it and I am getting used to it step by step,’ Mendy explained.
He added, “If I score it’s okay but if my friend Royce (Brownlie) scores it’s all the same - it’s all about the team.”
With the team his priority, Mendy said he was determined to now help the club become the first Queensland outfit to win the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Finals Series.
“It is something new for me because overseas we don’t have that kind of play-off but I am really excited.”
“I want to make history and want to be the first Queensland team to win it. I’m very excited for the next game in the competition,” Mendy concluded.
Jets now await the outcome of Sunday’s Elimination Final between Blacktown City and Canberra FC in Sydney to determine their Semi-Final opponent and venue.
