NPL wrap: Boland fires in Avondale’s win, late drama at Dorrien Gardens

A second-half double from striker Liam Boland has helped Avondale to a vital win over Hume City at Avenger Park.

After Tasuku Sekiya gave Avondale a slender lead at the break, Boland scored twice in three minutes to help his side to a much-needed 3-0 win.

Avondale’s lead at the top is now five-points to Bentleigh Greens, who overcame Altona Magic 2-1.

In the big derby match on the weekend, South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights played out a pulsating 1-1 draw.

Heidelberg United have a chance to move back into second spot on Monday night when they take on Kingston City.

Western Australia

Perth SC and Bayswater City both scored goals in second-half stoppage-time as the top-of-the-table clash ended 1-1 at Dorrien Gardens.

League-leaders Perth looked headed for another massive three points when Gustavo Catarcione struck just after the clock ticked over the 90-minute mark.

But there was still time for more drama as Bayswater hit back almost immediately through defender Adam Tong in the 93rd minute.

The draw means Perth SC’s lead at the top has been cut to eight points to Floreat Athena, who beat Balcatta 1-0.

Elsewhere, Inglewood United moved into third spot with a 2-1 win over Armadale, while Sorrento beat Perth Glory 3-2.

There will be no NPL action in WA next weekend at the Belt Up Cup Final will be played between Bayswater and Floreat.

South Australia

Adelaide Blues Eagles remain in the hunt for the premiership after a last-gasp win over lowly South Adelaide on Friday night.

The match looked destine to finish goalless until Liam McCabe struck in the 89th minute to give the Blue Eagles a priceless victory.

They remain seven points behind league-leaders Campbelltown City, who edged past MetroStars 2-1 thanks to a brace from Luigi DiTroia.

Elsewhere, Adelaide Comets bounced back to form with a 6-0 drubbing of Raiders, while Adelaide Olympic and Adelaide City drew 1-1.

Queensland

It’s as you were at the top of the table after the top three all recorded impressive wins over the weekend.

Peninsula Power were too strong for Western Pride, prevailing 3-0 at AJ Kelly Park.

Lions FC are still just a point off the summit after they edged past Gold Coast Knights in a thriller, while third-place Olympic FC beat Moreton Bay 2-0.

In other results, SWQ Thunder beat Sunshine Coast 3-2 and Brisbane Roar saw off Eastern Suburbs 3-1.

Northern NSW

League-leaders Edgeworth Eagles made the most of second-place Broadmeadow Magic’s weekend bye with a hard-fought win over Adamstown Rosebud.

In what was a celebratory day for the Rosebuds – who are in their 130th year – they didn’t get the results as Edgeworth won 1-0 with a goal from Josemari Atayde.

Elsewhere, Weston Workers lost ground to the Eagles, drawing 1-1 with Newcastle Jets Youth Lambton Jaffas crushed Valentine 5-2.

Australian Capital Territory

Tigers FC continued their march towards the Capital Football premiership as they outclassed Woden-Weston 3-0 on Sunday.

The side from Cooma went into the weekend with a five-point buffer at the top, and that remains the case after second-placed Canberra Olympic also took all three points.

Olympic overcame a plucky Tuggeranong United at O’Connor Enclosed.

In the other matches, Belconnen United beat Canberra FC 2-1 and Gungahlin United overcame Monaro Panthers 2-1.

Tasmania

South Hobart showed some excellent form ahead of their appearance in the FFA Cup, winning the Hobart Derby over the Zebras at Darcy Steet on Sunday.

South – who take on Marconi Stallions in the FFA Cup 2019 Round of 32 – won 2-0 thanks to goals from Nick Morton and Kasper Hallam.

Elsewhere, Devonport Strikers remain in the box seat for the premiership with a 4-0 drubbing of Launceston City, while Olympia Warriors came from a goal down to beat Glenorchy Knights 2-1.

There were no games in the NPL due to the 2019 TAFE NSW Waratah Cup final between Marconi Stallions and Sydney United 58.

And it was former Hyundai A-League striker Marko Jesic who inspired the Stallions to victory, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over a 10-man United.
