NPL wrap: APIA inflict Payne on Sydney United, leaders power on in Queensland

APIA Leichhardt have pulled off an incredible 1-0 win over Sydney United 58 in the NSW NPL despite playing almost 70 minutes with just 10 men.

Themba Muata-Marlow was sent off midway through the first half at Lambert Park but the hosts still pinched all three points thanks to Chris Payne’s deflected Rabona attempt.

It was a huge result for APIA, as they keep the heat on league-leaders Wollongong Wolves, who brushed aside Sydney FC 4-0.

Leading scorer Thomas James scored a double for Luke Wilkshire’s Wolves, who have a five-point buffer at the top.

Elsewhere, Manly United moved back into the top five with a 1-0 win over Marconi, Sutherland Sharks made it eight games without defeat after upsetting Blacktown City 2-1 and former Central Coast Mariner Peter Kerkeris scored Sydney Olympic’s goal in the 1-0 win over Hakoah.

South Australia

Defending champions Campbelltown City flexed their muscles in Round 14 with an impressive 5-2 away win over fourth-placed Raiders.

In an entertaining clash that sparked after the break, Lui Ditroia struck a second-half hat-trick as City opened up a three-point lead at the top of the ladder.

That’s because second-place Adelaide Blue Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw with West Adelaide.

In other results, MetroStars and South Adelaide played out a 3-3 thriller, while Adelaide City came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Adelaide United.

South Hobart’s dream June has continued after they hit six of the best in NPL action over the weekend.

After booking their spot in this year’s FFA Cup competition the just five days earlier, South Hobart crushed Clarence United 6-1 at Wentworth Park.

Elsewhere, Devonport Strikers maintained a buffer at the top of the ladder with a 5-2 drubbing of Glenorchy Knights while Kingborough upset Hobart Zebras 2-1.

A last-minute goal from former Adelaide United youngster Mark Ochieng has seen Hume City pull off a 2-1 win away at Heidelberg United on Saturday night.

In a clash between second and fourth, Hume overturned a 1-0 half-time deficit to steal all three points thanks to the live-wire 22-year-old.

In other results, leaders Avondale scored three goals in 11 minutes to account for South Melbourne 3-0 and Bentleigh Greens moved up to second spot with a 4-0 thrashing of Melbourne Knights.

Peninsula Power continue to run away with the premiership in Queensland after another exciting win on Saturday.

The Power prevailed 3-2 over Brisbane Roar at AJ Kelly Park.

Other results saw Olympic FC thrash Redlands United 6-0, Brisbane Strikers were too good for Gold Coast United 4-1, while the Gold Coast Knights consolidated their spot in the top three with a 2-0 win over Sunshine Coast.

Second-place Lions FC will take on Eastern Suburbs FC at Lions Stadium on Tuesday night.

Northern New South Wales

Weston Workers remain at the top of the ladder after seeing off Adamstown Rosebud on Saturday.

Liam Wilson was the hero for the home side, scoring both goals to maintain their one-point lead over Broadmeadow Magic.

The Magic outclassed Lake Macquarie City 2-0, with James Virgili scoring in each half to secure another three points for Ruben Zadkovich’s troops.

Elsewhere, Edgeworth lost ground on the top-two after a 1-0 loss to Charlestown City Blues, while Lambton Jaffas overcame Hamilton Olympic 2-0.
