NPL SA Women's Round 15 Preview

Metro United vs Adelaide Comets
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday, 13 August 6:15 PM

Round 15 kicks off tonight between two sides who faced off just three days ago in the WNPL and WSL Cup, as Metro take on Comets.

Metro were unable to push back into the top four at the first time of asking as they were blown away by three City goals in eight minutes after half-time, falling to a 4-2 defeat in the Grand Final replay.

Comets suffered the ignominy of becoming the first side to lose to last-placed Fulham in 2021, conceding a late winner that saw them slide to seventh on the league standings, albeit still just seven points behind fourth-placed NTC with eight rounds to go.

Metro ran out 2-1 winners over Comets earlier in the week to book their place in the final, so the beaten semi-finalists will be aiming to avoid a repeat of Tuesday night’s result.

Football SA NTC vs Salisbury Inter
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday, 13 August 8:15 PM

NTC have endured a rough recent patch but still cling onto fourth after 13 rounds, with their late kick-off match-up tonight shaping as another difficult test for the young side.

Madeleine Wright scored a sensational goal from the edge of the area, a looping shot that sailed over the keeper and dipped into the top corner, but it proved the only consolation for NTC as they slumped to a disappointing 4-1 loss to Uni.

Inter and ladder leaders West were unable to be split in their match last weekend that finished all square at 1-1 but were able to bounce back with a 4-0 hammering of City in the Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

As they sit two points behind West, Inter know that they need all the points they can get in the race for the premiership, which also applies to NTC as Metro breathe down their necks for the coveted fourth finals spot.

Adelaide City vs Adelaide University
Venue: Adelaide City Park
Date: Saturday, 14 August 2:30 PM

City will be looking to rebound from their disappointing Cup exit in mid-week when they take on Uni tomorrow, who themselves ended a barren run last weekend.

A hat-trick of textbook finishes from Chelsie Dawber, who fittingly wore the captain’s armband on the night, steered City to an impressive 4-2 win over Metro to entrench themselves in the top three.

Uni broke through for their first win in almost three months with a remarkable 4-1 upset victory over NTC, with Stella Rigon’s long-range strike, Sasha Coorey’s fine brace and an incredible Alysia Panagakos chip from over 35 yards capping off a memorable night.

City are well and truly in the hunt for higher honours this season and will be seeking to take any points they can get to continue to rival the top two, while Uni are still capable of moving further up and joining the chasing pack.

West Adelaide vs Fulham United
Venue: TK Shutter Reserve
Date: Saturday, 14 August 5:15 PM

It’s top vs bottom in the final match of the round, but the sides are in an unfamiliar position of the former coming off a draw and the latter a rare win.

West couldn’t quite edge past second-placed Inter to consolidate their lead at the top, settling for a 1-1 draw thanks to Christie Hillyer’s poacher’s effort that tied up the scores early on.

Fulham’s wait for a first victory of 2021 finally came to an end last weekend as a cool finish from close range by Fiona Worts in the 90th minute secured a drought-breaking 2-1 win over Comets.

West need to keep winning to stave off Inter and City in the race for first place, while Fulham have the chance to kick on from their positive result and pick up more wins before the season’s end.

West Adelaide line-up: 1. Erin Murphy, 2. Emily Hodgson, 3. Alison Atkins, 5. Christie Hillyer, 6. Elena Psaroulis, 8. Georgia Macri, 9. Harriet Burnett, 11. Laura Johns, 12. Nicole Tilley, 13.
