NPL Review: Moreton Bay, Roar rely on injury time levellers

Wash-outs delivered another disjointed round in National Premier Leagues matches in Queensland on the weekend, but those that did get underway still offered plenty of thrills on offer.

League-leaders Gold Coast Knights dropped their first points of the season as they played out a 1-1 draw with Moreton Bay United at the Croatian Sports Centre.

Jets' captain Alex Janovski delivered an injury time equaliser for the visitors to end his side's two-match losing run.

Earlier, the Knights had seemed on track to extend their four-match winning run when Jheison Macauce netted his fifth goal of the season in the first half. However, the second half send-off of Nicholas Panetta opened the door for the plucky Jets to prove spoilers.

Brisbane Roar Youth also stole a point in injury time as they fought back from two goals down with ten minutes remaining to draw Olympic FC 2-2 at Goodwin Park.

The Red and White looked well on track to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season when Jez Lofthouse struck on the hour to add to Jack Glover's first-half opener.

However, the Roar came home with a wet sail as Joshua Moreland's 80th minute effort was complemented by Kai Trewin's late winner - Olympic's caused not helped by the send off of Shelford Dais.

While Redlands United also left it late as they made it two away wins on the bounce against Eastern Suburbs FC 2-1 at Heath Park.

Shuto Kuboyama delivered an 87th minute winner for the Red Devils to see his side move to tenth on the table.

The visitors earlier led at half-time through Igor Sao Jose's opener, before the hosts levelled from the penalty spot via Abraham Yango in the 78th minute.

Scheduled clashes between Capalaba FC and Brisbane Strikers at John Fredericks Park, Magpies Crusaders United and Lions FC at Sologinkin Oval, Sunshine Coast Wanderers and Brisbane City at Ballinger Park, and Gold Coast United and Peninsula Power were all postponed due to weather.

Defending Premiers and Champions Lions FC handed Logan Lightning their first defeat of the season as they prevailed 5-3 in a thrilling clash at Cornubia Park.

Lions' Amy Gunston and Lightning's Shae Connors both posted doubles for their sides as the Lightning twice levelled terms in the tit-for-tat contest.

However, the Lions steadied late to extend their unbeaten run to four matches - captain Mariel Hecher wrapping up the result in the 88th minute with her third goal of the campaign.

The Lions were edged out of top spot on the table on goal difference by Gold Coast United, who also made it four matches without defeat by downing Capalaba FC 2-0 at Coplick Family Sports Park.

United struck both goals in the second half as Momo Hayashi's opener shortly after the hour was complemented by a 74th minute effort from Isabella Habuda.

The result marks a second clean sheet of the season for United, who lead the competition's defensive returns with just three goals conceded so far.

In Toowoomba, Mitchelton FC delivered the biggest win of the round as they thumped SWQ Thunder 7-2 at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

Jamie Ayala was the star for Mitchie as they notched their first win of the campaign with hat-trick, while there were also goals for Sofie Persson, Madison Moy, Rebekah Horsey and Georgia Muir.

The Thunder's only consolation came via a brace to Louise Rolfe as they remained without a point from their opening three fixtures.

Elsewhere, lower-table Souths United and QAS notched their first points of the season as they played out a 2-2 draw at Wakerley Park.

QAS took a slim lead into the half through Lanni Mcdougall's 44th penalty strike, after their second minute opener from Georgia Beaumont was cancelled out by South's Amy Morland.

However, Souths again steadied themselves to equalise in the second half as Harriet Withers netted her third of the campaign.

While there was no play for The Gap FC in their home opener against Moreton Bay United due to postponement, and Eastern Suburbs FC sat out the round with the bye.
