NPL Queensland Women's Round 22 Review

Lions extended their lead at the top while Gold Coast United, Souths United and Olympic FC all received boosts for their respective ambitions across the weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 22 action.

Lions moved seven points clear at the top with a 1-0 win over second placed Eastern Suburbs at Heath Park on Sunday evening.

The league’s leading scorer, Tegan Riding scored the games only goal in the 24th minute when she got in behind the Easts defence and fired a finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Third placed Peninsula Power moved to within four points of Easts with a commanding 5-0 win over Capalaba at Max Haynes field on Sunday night.

Power’s star duo were in fine form with Bonnies Davies bagging a hat-trick while Sara D’Appolonia chipped in with a brace.

Fourth placed Gold Coast United extended the gap between themselves and the chasing pack to six points with a 1-0 win over Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park on Sunday afternoon.

United’s Japanese midfielder Momo Hayashi netted the games only goal in the 67th minute via the penalty spot.

Souths United moved seven points clear of the drop zone with a 3-0 win over QAS at Wakerley Park on Friday night.

Sarah O’Donoghue netted a double in the opening 16 minutes of the second half before Sunny Franco rounded out the scoring with a composed finish from the top of the box in the 77th minute.

Olympic moved above Capalaba on goal difference at the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win over Mitchelton at Teralba Park on Sunday night.

Kallie Peurifoy put the home side ahead with a composed one-on-one finish in the 36th minute before Gabriella Francisco’s second half brace sealed Olympic’s third league win of the season.

Francisco headed home from a Tonia-Marie Rantucci cross in the 52nd minute before pouncing on a loose ball inside the area and poking in a finish in the 65th minute to seal the come-from-behind win.
