NPL QLD Women's Semi Finals Review

Eastern Suburbs and Gold Coast United will battle it out in the 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s Grand Final after winning through in the weekend’s Semi Finals.

A goal in the 122nd minute saw Eastern Suburbs book their spot in the big dance with a last ditch 1-0 win over Peninsula Power after extra time at Heath Park on Saturday night.

The best chance during regulation time fell to Sofie Persson in the 7th minute who was denied one-on-one by a brilliant Liz Harrington save.

Power grew into the contest and came closest through a pair of Bonnie Davies chances in extra time.

Persson then popped up with the winner at the death, squeezing a finish into the back of the net on the end of a corner for the home side.

Gold Coast United stunned Premiers Lions with a 1-0 win at Luxury Paints Stadium in the second Semi Final on Sunday evening.

The games only goal came after just 46 seconds through Zoe Corbett, who’s cross from the right sailed into the back of the net after Ryleigh Saunderson’s attempt to connect a header wrongfooted Lions keeper Elli Chapple.

Despite coming into Sunday’s match as underdogs it was United who enjoyed the better of the chances with a pair of fine saves from Chapple denying both Saunderson and Corbett one-on-one.

Lions best chance of the evening fell to Rebecca Kirkup in the 85th minute when the winger made space for herself inside the area before dragging her effort just wide of the bottom corner at the far post.

Sunday’s defeat sees Lions, who already won the Premiership and Kappa Women’s Super Cup this season miss out on the NPL Queensland Women’s Grand Final for the first time since 2018.

Gold Coast United and Eastern Suburbs will go head-to-head in the big dance on Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium (4:30pm Kick off).
