NPL QLD Women’s Semi Finals Preview

The NPL Queensland Women’s Semi Finals are here with matches between Eastern Suburbs and Peninsula Power as well as Lions and Gold Coast United set to decide who will face off in the 2023 Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium next weekend.

The first Semi Final pits second placed Eastern Suburbs against third placed Peninsula Power at Heath Park on Saturday evening.

Six points separated the pair at the conclusion of the regular season with Easts taking the solitary win from battles between the two with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Emma Starr and Maya Brueckner in April.

The other two matches between the sides finished in a pair of 1-1 draws pointing to the fine margins Saturday’s Semi Final will likely come down to.

Big performances from Bonnie Davies and Sara D’Appolonia, who finished second and third on the top scorers charts with 24 and 17 goals respectively will be crucial for Power while Sofie Persson who netted 15 times for Easts looms as a key goal threat for the hosts.

On Sunday, Premiers Lions will go up against fourth placed Gold Coast United in the second Semi Final at Luxury Paints Stadium.

Lions come into Sunday’s Semi Final after securing their third straight Kappa Women’s Super Cup with a 3-1 victory over Souths United last weekend.

The pair played out a 0-0 draw in the most recent meeting at the start of August while Lions ran out victorious in the opening two match ups between the two.

Sunday’s match also doubles as a re-match of last year’s Grand Final which Lions won 6-0 thanks to a Tegan Riding hattrick along with goals from Ayesha Norrie, Mariel Hecher and Amy Gunston.

The winners of the weekend’s Semi Finals will meet in 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, September 17 (4:30pm KO).

Both Semi Finals will be live streamed on FQTV as well as the Football Queensland YouTube channel and Facebook page.
