NPL QLD Women’s Round 26 Review

Eastern Suburbs are within touching distance of a home Semi Final while Souths United secured their NPL status for 2024 across the course of the weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 26 action.

Eastern Suburbs remain second heading into the final day after playing out 1-1 draw with third placed Peninsula Power at Heath Park on Friday night.

Maya Brueckner opened the scoring for the home side with a header in the tenth minute before Kathryn Sherar pounced to turn home the rebound after Sara D’Appolonia’s free-kick came back off to crossbar in the 36th minute to secure a share of the spoils for Mick Gallo’s side.

Souths United sealed their NPL status for 2024 after playing out a 0-0 draw with Olympic at Wakerley Park on Friday night.

Friday’s stalemate leaves Olympic all but mathematically in ninth setting up a clash with SWQ Thunder in the relegation play off next month.

Capalaba now look locked on for automatic relegation after a 3-1 defeat to Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park left them three points adrift of Olympic with a 21-goal difference swing required on the final day if they’re to avoid a last placed finish.

Kyla Hanson put Capalaba ahead in the third minute but the Wanderers fought back through a Charlie Shanahan brace and Louise Rolfe goal to seal their eighth win of the season.

Premiers Lions continued their fine run of form with a 2-0 win over QAS at Luxury Paints Stadium on Friday night.

Tegan Riding opened the scoring with a first-time strike that found it’s way into the bottom corner from the top of the box in the 53rd minute before Kalli Cowles scrambled home a finish on the end of a corner for the home side seven minutes later to round out the scoring.

Gold Coast United were the only other side in the league’s top four to take all three points after defeating Mitchelton 3-0 at Coplick Sports Park on Friday night.

Bronti Rose scored a hat-trick for United who will face Lions away in the Semi Final in early September.
