NPL QLD Women’s Round 25 Review

Lions secured the 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s Premiership with two rounds to spare while there were important results in the makeup of the finals positions and relegation places across the weekend’s Round 25 action.

Lions wrapped up their third straight Premiership with a 3-0 win over Olympic at Goodwin Park on Sunday afternoon.

First half goals from Tiarna Karambasis, Tegan Riding and Tia Apoo did the damage for Rob Askew’s side who sit nine points clear at the top of the league with just two rounds remaining.

Eastern Suburbs reclaimed second spot with a commanding 6-2 victory over Mitchelton at Teralba Park on Friday night.

Sofie Persson netted a hat-trick while Harkana Tkatchenko, Chanteel Maugeri and Taylah Roncato were also on target against a Mithelton side who found the back of the net through Madison Lay and Jemma Burton.

Peninsula Power slipped three points behind Easts following a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sunshine Coast Wanderers at AJ Kelly Park on Friday night.

The visitors lead 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Louise Rolfe and Marli Danger before Sara D’Appolonia netted a late consolation for Power.

Fourth placed Gold Coast United played out a 2-2 draw with QAS at Coplick Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.

QAS were two goals ahead after just 18 minutes thanks to Grace Kuilamu and Holly Bonertz-Benn before the home side fought back through strikes from Bronti Rose and Zoe Corbett to steal a share of the spoils.

Capalaba moved to within two points of Olympic in their bid to avoid an automatic relegation spot after playing out a 1-1 draw with Souths United at Max Haynes Field on Friday night.

Souths went ahead in the eleventh minute thanks to a Natasha Wheeler own goal before Jade Uhlmann found an equaliser midway through the first half.
