NPL QLD Women's Round 24 Review

Lions are just one point away from securing the 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s Premiership while there were important wins for Peninsula Power and Olympic across the weekend’s Round 24 action.

League leaders Lions retained their nine-point lead at the top of the table despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Gold Coast United at Coplick Sports Park on Saturday evening.

Despite Lions dropping points Eastern Suburbs were unable to reduce the gap at the top after playing out a 1-1 draw with QAS at Heath Park on Saturday.

Chantelle Maugeri put the home side ahead with a long-range effort in the 14th minute before QAS stole a share of the spoils when Tully Heatley burst through the heart of the Easts defence and slammed home a finish in the 50th minute.

Peninsula Power climbed above Easts into second on goal difference after defeating Souths United 2-0 at Wakerley Park on Saturday night.

Bonnies Davies netted her 24th goal of the season with a clinical finish in the 11th minute to put Power in front before Sara D’Appolonia sealed the result with a 32nd minute penalty.

Olympic took a big step towards avoiding automatic relegation with a 3-1 win over Capalaba in a battle of the bottom two at Goodwin Park on Sunday evening.

Capalaba drew first blood after Kyla Hanson latched onto a stray back pass before nutmegging Olympic keeper, Julia Duffy and finishing in the 22nd minute to put the visitors in front.

Vedrana Popovic levelled the scores in the 31st minute when she got in behind the Bulldogs defence and found the back of the net with a first-time finish.

Popovic then turned provider for a Rayleen Miriam Bauelua close-range finish to put Olympic ahead in the 58th minute before Ana Tormena rounded the keeper and finished to round out the scoring the in 66th minute.

Mitchelton’s finals hopes are left hanging by a thread following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park on Sunday evening.

Rebekkah Horsey put the home side ahead with a fourth minute header before Kallie Peurifoy levelled the scores with a finish from a tight angle 20 minutes later.

Wanderers re-took the lead after a Kayla Moore strike from distance came back off the cross bar and ricocheted off Emily Adams into the back of the net before Chelsea Scarff completed the 3-1 win with a strike from the top of the box in the 56th minute.
