NPL QLD Women's Round 24 Preview

With just four rounds of the regular season remaining a big weekend of NPL Queensland Women’s action awaits with crucial matches at both ends of the table set to be played across the course of Round 24.

League leaders Lions make the trip to Coplick Sports Park to face Gold Coast United in a re-match of last season’s Grand Final on Saturday evening.

Lions hold a nine-point lead at the top of the league after defeating Capalaba 5-1 last weekend thanks to five goals from Tegan Riding, who now has 31 for the campaign.

Meanwhile fourth placed United, who’s mid-season resurgence has seen them open up a seven-point gap on the chasing pack drew 1-1 with Easts last weekend.

Lions have come out victorious in each of the two previous meetings between the pair so far this season.

Second placed Eastern Suburbs host sixth placed QAS at Heath Park on Saturday evening.

After going two matches without a win Lachlan Leong’s side are losing touch with Lions at the top of the league but maintain a two-point lead over third placed Peninsula Power as they look to lock in a home Semi Final.

QAS who suffered defeats in each of their previous two clashes with Easts climbed to sixth with a win over Sunshine Coast Wanderers last weekend.

In Saturday’s other match third placed Peninsula Power travel to face eighth placed Souths United at Wakerley Park.

Power were 2-0 victors both times the two have gone head-to-head this season.

On Sunday evening Olympic and Capalaba battle it out at Goodwin Park in a do-or-die clash for their survival hopes.

The pair sit level at the bottom of the league, occupying the two relegation spots and are seven points adrift of safety.

Expect goals in this one with the previous meetings between the pair finishing in a 3-3 draw while Capalaba were 3-2 winners in the opening round clash.

In Sunday’s other match Mitchelton look to keep their faint finals hope alive when they travel to face Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park.

Fifth placed Mitchelton currently sit seven points outside of the finals positions but will look to close the gap with Gold Coast United up against the league leaders ahead of their meeting with Sarah Evans side on matchday 26.
