NPL QLD Women's Round 23 Review

The weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 23 action saw Lions edge closer to a third straight Premiership while the battle for positions inside the top four and relegation zone remains as tight as ever.

Lions moved nine points clear at the top of the league with a commanding 5-1 win over Capalaba at Max Haynes Field on Sunday evening.

Capalaba, who sit bottom of the league went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a 26th minute Kyla Hanson strike but the defending Premiers roared back in the second half courtesy of a five-goal haul from the league’s leading scorer Tegan Riding.

Eastern Suburbs slipped further behind in the title race after playing out a 1-1 draw with Gold Coast United at Coplick Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.

Zoe Corbett put United ahead with a driven first-time finish in the 50th minute before Emma Starr stole a share of the spoils for Easts with a 69th minute header.

Third placed Peninsula Power moved to within two points of Easts with a 2-1 win over Olympic at Goodwin Park on Friday night.

Bonnie Davies opened the scoring in the 19th minute when she got in behind the Olympic defence and slid a finish into the bottom corner before Gabriella Francisco levelled the scores when she bundled home a finish on the end of an Olympic corner in the 69th minute.

Sara D’Appolonia then stepped up to seal all three points for Power with an 84th minute penalty after Kiara Rychvalsky was brought down by Cleo Trevett-Lyall inside the area.

Fifth placed Mitchelton remain seven points outside of the top four after picking up a 4-1 win over Souths United at Teralba Park on Friday night.

Carla Wilson netted a double while Kaillie Peurifoy and Rachael Fraser were also on target for the Mustangs.

Sophie Bohan scored a late consolation for Souths, who finish the weekend in eighth position.

QAS climbed to sixth on the ladder with a 2-1 win over Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park on Sunday afternoon.

Two goals in the space of three minutes from Daisy Brown had QAS 2-0 ahead at the 20 minute mark before Louise Rolfe scored what proved to be a consolation midway through the second half.
