NPL QLD Men's Round 19 Review

The top four retain their finals positioning while the title and relegation pictures become increasingly clearer following the weekend’s NPL Queensland Men’s Round 19 action.

League leaders Gold Coast Knights were unable to extend their lead at the top after being held to a 0-0 draw by Peninsula Power at the Croatian Sports Centre on Sunday evening.

Knights retain their five point advantage at the top of the table after second placed Gold Coast United failed to capitalise as they also played out a goalless draw with Olympic at Coplick Sports Park on Sunday evening.

Olympic who finished with ten minute following a second half red card to Zac Kierpal keep their slender survival hopes alive but will have to win all of their last three games if they’re to close the nine point gap between themselves and Redlands United.

Third placed Moreton Bay took a big step towards a finals football after overturning two-goal deficit to open up a six-point gap on fifth placed Brisbane City at Wolter Park on Friday night.

City lead 2-0 after 39 minute thanks to goals from Oliver Plusnin and Will Dent but a Declan Smith header two minutes after the visitors second saw the Jets halve the deficit heading into the break.

The league’s leading scorer Marquez Walters, who now has 15 goals to his name levelled the scores with a header of his own two minutes into the second half before Will Edmiston completed the comeback for the home side with a stunning volley in the 67th minute.

Lions hung onto fourth spot after salvaging a point with a late goal in a 1-1 draw against Rochedale Rovers at Underwood Park on Friday night.

Rovers, who remain four points adrift of Lions in sixth took the lead through a looping Oliver Dearn header in the 39th minute before Jackson Hart-Phillips rescued a share of the spoils for Darren Simes side with an 88th minute rocket.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers picked up their straight victory and climbed to eighth on the league table with a 1-0 triumph over Redlands United at Compass Grounds on Saturday afternoon.

Harrison Hooper scored the games only goal in the 85th minute when he reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area and found the bottom corner with a first time finish.

Young Roar finish the weekend in seventh position after defeating already relegated Eastern Suburbs 3-2 at Heath Park on Sunday evening.

Owen Baker’s side lead 3-0 after 35 minutes thanks to goals from Fernando Nash, Ty Cobb and Isiah Quinn before the hosts pulled a pair of goals back through Emilio Martinez and Alex Simmons.
