NPL preview: Title races heat up and crunch FFA Cup clashes continue

Four of the top five in NPL Victoria go head-to-head and it's crunch time across the nation in the FFA Cup. Get up to speed on all of the best National Premier Leagues action in this week's preview.

It’s two versus four in Victoria as Heidelberg United go up against Hume City at Olympic Village, while Bentleigh Greens, who occupy third, face the travelling fifth-placed Melbourne Knights.

League-leaders Avondale, who are four points clear, will seek to take advantage of any slips ups when they go on the road against seventh-placed South Melbourne on Sunday.

Round 17 lights up on Friday night when 11th-place Dandenong City look to build on last week’s 4-1 win at Pascoe Vale when they play Green Gully SC, who sit in sixth position.

Queensland

Runaway leaders Peninsula Power will seek to increase their seven-point advantage to 10 when they play tenth-place Brisbane Roar on Saturday.

Closest contenders and defending champions, Lions FC, entertain Eastern Suburbs FC at Lions Stadium on Sunday.

Struggling Redlands United get Round 20 started on Friday night against midweek FFA Cup Round of 32 qualifiers Olympic FC before third-placed Gold Coast Knights go to rock bottom Sunshine Coast FC on Saturday.

New South Wales

With a cluster of teams aiming to catch five-point NPL NSW leaders Wollongong Wolves, four of the top seven face off in Round 15.

Leading the chase, APIA Leichhardt Tigers square up against fourth-placed Sydney United 58. Meanwhile on Sunday, six faces seven as Manly United host Marconi Stallions, who themselves are only six points off second-placed APIA.

Wolves host second-from-bottom Sydney FC as the table toppers seek to bounce back from their second loss of the season, a 2-1 home defeat by United, last week.

Northern New South Wales

In one of the National Premiers Leagues' tightest title races at present, Weston Workers FC will be planning on extending their advantage against lowly Adamstown Rosebud FC.

With two points separating the top three, second-placed Broadmeadow Magic will try to keep the pressure on when they host basement dwellers Lake Macquarie City. Third-placed Edgeworth FC are well in the hunt for top spot and they travel to Charlestown City Blues.

Fresh off the back of their historic midweek FFA Cup triumph, Round of 32 contestants Maitland FC are up against Valentine FC on Sunday.

Western Australia

The prestige of a place in the FFA Cup Round of 32 is the prize as we enter State Cup finals season out West.

NPL WA’s second-placed Floreat Athena host Sorrento FC, who lie eighth in the table, at E&D Litis Stadium on Saturday.

On Sunday, fifth-placed Bayswater City SC welcome tenth-placed Rockingham City FC to Frank Drago Reserve on Sunday. The winners of those two ties take up Western Australia’s two spots in the FFA Cup Round of 32.

South Australia

Only a point separates Campbelltown City from Adelaide Blue Eagles at the top and both sides go on the road as they battle for supremacy in NPL SA.

Ladder-ladders City have their tougher task on paper, facing off against the fourth-placed Raiders. Meanwhile on Saturday, the chasing Blue Eagles travel to West Adelaide, who sit in tenth.

The South Australia action kicks off on Friday night, as fifth-placed Adelaide Comets search to return to winning ways against seventh-placed Adelaide Olympic at Jack Smith Park.

Tasmania

South Hobart sealed FFA Cup bragging rights over Devonport in midweek as the title contenders return to league action on Saturday.

The state capital side lifted the Lakoseljac Cup with a 2-0 victory on Strikers territory on Monday night to punch their ticket to the FFA Cup 2019 Round of 32.

This weekend, the second-placed side face Clarence United on Saturday aiming to close the three-point gap that Devonport possess at the summit of NPL Tasmania.

After missing the chance to light up the national stage once again, Devonport will need to recover and defeat Riverside Olympic to hold their lead at the top.

Northern Territory

There is one Northern Territory spot available in the FFA Cup Round of 32 for the winners of the Sport Minister’s Cup.

University Azzurri have secured their place in the final on June 25. On, Saturday, we find out who joins them when Verdi FC face Darwin Olympic SC at the Darwin Football Stadium.

In league action, Norzone table-toppers Casuarina FC travel to face third-placed Hellenic AC in the pick of Round 9.

Capital

It’s all about the magic of the cup this weekend as Tigers FC and Canberra FC battle for ACT’s solitary spot in the FFA Cup Round of 32.

The table-topping Tigers have won six of eight in the league this season, only losing once, while visitors Canberra lie in sixth spot with three wins, a draw and four defeats.

The sides shared the points in a 1-1 league draw, but there can be no ties on Saturday. The winners take the Federation Cup and a moment on the national stage come July.
