NPL Preview: Rockdale look for fresh start under new coach

Struggling NPL NSW outfit Rockdale City Suns begin life under new boss Nick Porreca on Sunday with a clash against defending champions Sydney Olympic.

After three straight defeats, the Suns made the decision to part ways with Paul Reid this week, with the club hopeful a change of coach can kick-start their season.

Elsewhere, league-leaders Wollongong Wolves are looking for a fifth win in six games to start the season as they host Mount Druitt Town Rangers on Sunday.

There’s a massive triple-header on Saturday night with Sutherland Sharks hosting Manly United, Sydney FC taking on Blacktown City and Marconi Stallions up against Sydney United 58.

Tasmania

A big rivalry in Tassie takes centre stage on Sunday as Glenorchy Knights take on the Hobart Zebras.

The Zebras are unbeaten through five rounds to sit in fourth spot, just ahead of the Knights, who will leapfrog Hobart with a win at KGV.

In other matches, Devonport Strikers will be expecting to reclaim top spot when they host Kingborough at Valley Road, South Hobart will go in as red-hot favourites away to Riverside, while Clarence does battle with Launceston City.

Victoria

After dropping points for the first time last weekend in a 1-1 draw with Hume City, Avondale will be confident of bouncing back when they take on Dandenong Thunder.

But the biggest match of the round comes from Olympic Village on Saturday night, with second-placed Heidelberg United hosting Bentleigh Greens in third.

South Melbourne’s home clash with Hume City is another intriguing battle, while there should be plenty of entertainment as Pascoe Vale open Round 9 with a home clash against Melbourne Knights on Friday night.

Canberra Olympic sent an ominous warning to their Capital Football rivals by crushing the defending champions last weekend and now host Gungahlin United on Sunday.

Canberra FC have the chance to bounce back from their first-up defeat away at Tuggeranong United, while Monaro Panthers head to Tigers FC in a battle of two opening-round winners.

Queensland

Round 11 kicks off on Saturday afternoon at Cleveland Showgrounds, with the improving Redlands United hosting Peninsula Power.

South Australia

There’s quite a logjam on the ladder in South Australia with teams from second to eighth all locked on 10 competition points.

Adelaide Blue Eagles are the team at the top though, four points clear of the chasing pack heading into round 7, where they travel to Adelaide Comets.

The West Adelaide clash with Adelaide City at Valo Football Centre on Saturday also promises to be a ripper.

Western Australia

Alfred Skeet Reserve is the venue for the match of the round in WA where Armadale takes on league-leaders Balcatta.

After starting the season in impressive fashion, Armadale have picked up just a point in the last two weeks but can steady the ship with a win in this one.

In other key games, second-placed Perth SC are at home against Floreat Athena, while third-placed Perth Glory are on the road against Stirling Lions.

Northern NSW

After registering their first win of the season last weekend, Adamstown Rosebud will head to high-flying Edgeworth Eagles with little fear on Saturday night.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s men pulled off an upset of the Eagles in 2018 and will hope the momentum garnered from last weekend’s triumph will continue at Jack McLaughlan Oval.

Elsewhere, Lambton Jaffas face a tricky road trip to Valentine Phoenix, while Charlestown City Blues host Maitland FC on Sunday.
