NPL NSW Women's - Round 8 Review

Round eight of the NPL NSW Women’s 1 competition gave a heap of great match ups and some intriguing results full of turn arounds.

Sydney University 4-1 Football NSW Institute

At Arlington Oval, the Football NSW Institute returned to repeat the damage they did last year against Sydney University.

They started the best way possible and shook the Champions right up, taking an early lead via Aideen Keane.

Not long after though, parity was restored as Bianca Galic found the back of the net.

Kendall Fletcher then gave them lead as they went into the half time break leading 2-1.

Galic collected her brace with another goal in the second half before new signing and former Matilda star Michelle Heyman got on the act and rounded off the result.

Blacktown Spartans 1-2 Northern Tigers

A ‘six pointer’ for the Northern Tigers took place at Blacktown Football Park as the Blacktown Spartans played host.

Ash Crofts gave Brad Attard’s side the best possible start as they took an early lead which they held going into half time.

The Tigers needed a response in the second half and Hannah McNulty equalised for them.

Lauren Allan then scored for the away side to record an impressive turnaround win and a massive three points in the fight for finals football.

Illawarra Stingrays 0-3 Manly United

On a fine run, the Illawarra Stingrays couldn’t afford to drop any points against Manly United at JJ Kelly Park.

But it was a furious start by the Northern Beaches side.

Three first half goals, one each to Tara Andrews, Remy Siemsen and Claudia Cholakian were enough for a commanding 3-0 half time lead.

Neither side added to the score line in the second period as Manly stuck a dagger into the Stingrays finals hopes.

Bankstown City 1-2 Emerging Jets

At Jensen Park, Bankstown City hosted the Emerging Jets.

Two teams, winless and at the wrong end of the table did battle looking for their first points of the season.

It’d be the young Jets who would heap further misery on Bankstown as they recorded a tight 2-1 victory.

NWS Koalas 3-2 Sydney Olympic

At Christie Park, the match of the day took place between the North West Sydney Koalas and Sydney Olympic.

Just after the half hour mark, Angelique Hristodoulou gave the away side the lead with a header from a corner.

With time running out in the first period, Tahlia Macri pounced on an opportunity and slotted the ball home to find the Koalas equaliser.

In a freak few minutes, the Koalas took the lead in the 60th minute as Morgan Roberts tapped home into an empty goal after Macri squared her up.

Charlotte Mclean hit back almost immediately for Olympic after some fine work by Cortnee Vine to restore parity for Olympic.

With just over 10 minutes to go, the Koalas were awarded a penalty after an error and then poor challenge from Amanda Horafios.

Nat Tobin took the responsibility and made no mistake, burying her penalty into the top corner of the goal to give the Koalas the lead once more.

They held out till the end after some serious pressure from Olympic to record a massive victory.

APIA Leichhardt 3-0 Macarthur Rams

At Lambert Park APIA Leichhardt hosted the Macarthur Rams.

In a frantic 20 seconds after only 3 minutes, the first real opportunity fell the way of Leena Khamis but she couldn’t capitalise on a golden opportunity.

APIA went the other way on the counter and when Georgia Yeoman-Dale’s effort was saved, Princess Ibini slammed home the opener.

Ash Palombi then doubled the lead with a well-placed shot, despite Sham Khamis getting a hand to it.

It was 3-0 five minutes before half time as Yeoman-Dale took advantage of a defensive error to calmly place the ball home.

Sham Khamis made some fine saves in the second period as well as some great defending from Renee Rollason to keep the score at 0-0.
