NPL NSW Women's - Round 6 Review

It’s 26 and counting for the Champions as they tighten their grip on the Premiership in the NPL NSW Women’s 1 competition.

Illawarra Stingrays 2-0 Bankstown City

It was a spirited Bankstown City outfit at JJ Kelley Park on Sunday as they took on the Illawarra Stingrays.

Whatever happened mid-week at Jensen Park came with good effect on Sunday down the coast.

It still wasn’t enough to take something away from the Stingrays but the performance and result will raise confidence at Bankstown.

The Stingrays’ second straight win came courtesy of goals from Olivia Price and Kaelah Austin.

Blacktown Spartans 4-0 Emerging Jets

Blacktown continued their fight for the Premiership on Sunday when they welcomed the Emerging Jets who finally got some football in their feet.

The win for the Spartans kept them in equal second place, three points off the pace.

Ash Crofts, Annie Daczko and a brace to Rosie Galea helped the home side to a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Sydney Olympic 3-0 Northern Tigers

The Northern Tigers couldn’t afford dropping points against Sydney Olympic on Sunday at Peter Moore Field.

But it was the home side who took the lead through Shadeene Evans in the first half.

A second half brace from Cortnee Vine meant Olympic celebrated an important 3-0 win.

The loss leaves the Tigers five points outside of the top four.

Sydney University 2-0 Manly United

A massive match took place at Sydney University Football Ground on Sunday as the Champions hosted Manly United.

A tight first half saw neither team really threaten except for late in the opening 45 when both teams hit the woodwork.

It wouldn’t take the home side long in the second period to take the lead after a mix up in defence allowed Clare Wheeler to head the ball into the back of thet net.

Shortly after Rachel Soutar made it 2-0 with an extremely fortuitous goal to double the home sides lead.

The loss meant Manly dropped out of the top four while Uni kept their place on top of the competition.

Football NSW Institute 6-1 Macarthur Rams

Arguably the shock of the round at Valentine Sports Park as Football NSW Institute hosted the Macarthur Rams.

The home side went into the break one-goal to the good thanks to Charlie Rule.

A hat-trick to Bryleeh Henry and a brace for Aideen Keane did the job for the Institute while Mia Diacogiorgis picked up a late consolation.

The 6-1 demolition was made worse for the Rams as Leena Khamis received a red card.

NWS Koalas 1-1 APIA Leichhardt

At Christie Park it was a fine battle between the North West Sydney Koalas and APIA Leichhardt.

The home side should’ve had the lead inside the first minutes but Sophie Harding headed over from point blank range.

It wouldn’t be till near the end of the first period when more chance came.

First, Ash Palombi skimmed the top of the bar with a shot from outside the area for APIA before Nat Tobin hit another thunderbolt that was just tipped over by Sophie magus.

Shortly after the break, the Koalas would take a deserved lead.

Harding was pushed over in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Despite diving the right way, Magus had no chance of saving Tobin’s well taken penalty.

As time passed, APIA pushed for an equaliser but the well structured and disciplined Koalas defence held firm.

All until the 90th minute.

Tara Pender delivered a beautiful cross into the box for Rhianna Pollicina who matched the delivery with the finish, volleying beyond Katie Offer.

It must be added that Georgia Yeoman-Dale did incredibly well in the lead up showing true fight and determination to save a ball that looked destined to roll out of play.

That’s how the result would end, a hard fought 1-1 stalemate.
