The final four decided in Northern NSW, a penalty shoot-out in New South Wales, and a failure to lock up top spot in Western Australia: it’s action aplenty in the National Premier Leagues.
Here’s our wrap of the weekend's action:
NEW SOUTH WALES
APIA Leichhardt were pipped to the premiership in the NPL NSW last weekend after a shock defeat to Hakoah, and this weekend they slipped up once more.
With the scores 1-1 at the end of extra-time in their preliminary final clash with Sydney United 58, the Tigers couldn’t break the deadlock and the game went to penalties where United triumphed 6-4.
Rockdale City Suns caused something of an upset themselves, beating out Blacktown City 2-0 to advance in the finals series.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Almost at the end of one of the country’s longest NPL seasons, there was a 90th-minute slip-up in the race for the title which means things will head to the final weekend.
Two goals ahead with half an hour to go, Perth Glory went down to ten men and conceded a pair of late goals to Cockburn City to draw 3-3.
It means Glory have to manage at least a point next weekend in order to wrap things up, but Perth SC could still steal things after they beat EDU Joondalup 2-1 to come within two points of top spot.
QUEENSLAND
North Queensland United have been relegated following their 1-0 defeat to Brisbane Strikers on Saturday night.
At the other end of the ladder a Marek Madle double secured Lions FC a 3-0 win over Brisbane Roar, and the NPL QLD premiership. It was their 13th NPL QLD win in a row and 16th in all competitions.
VICTORIA
Heidelberg United secured back-to-back NPL Victoria premierships on Sunday, with a 4-2 win over South Melbourne in the weekend’s only fixture.
Playing out a catch-up match from way back in Round 9, Heidelberg were cruising at half-time – up 4-0 thanks to goals from Tom Cahill, Alex Schiavo, Andrew Cartanos and an own goal.
South Melbourne clawed back two goals in four minutes midway through the second half, but the Burgers were able to hold on as the rain fell on Sunday afternoon.
ACT
Belconnen United have just missed out on the finals after going down 3-2 to Tigers FC on Sunday afternoon. They lead at half-time, but four goals in the second-half seen them go down.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that the team they would have been hoping to jump into fourth, Tuggeranong United, lost themselves: they went down 3-0 to Canberra FC.
It means that Canberra FC, Canberra Olympic, Tigers FC, and Tuggeranong will now face off in the finals series which gets underway next weekend.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Only the top three are left in the NPL SA finals series, and the premiers Campbelltown City locked up their place in the decider after a 1-0 win over runners-up Adelaide City in the return-leg semi-final.
Adelaide will now face Metrostars in the preliminary final after the latter beat out Adelaide United Youth 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
TASMANIA
Devonport City got themselves back into the winner's circle and maintained their three-point lead at the top of the ladder with a big 7-1 win over Northern Rangers.
Keeping up the pressure is second-place South Hobart, who fought to a 3-1 win over Launceston City on Saturday.
NORTHERN NSW
With the premiership already tied up, Edgeworth rested a number of players in their tight 1-0 win over Valentine on Sunday.
FFA Cup 2018 Round of 16 qualifiers Broadmeadow Magic went down 2-0 to Maitland, who locked up fourth place with the win.
