Former Socceroo Scott McDonald appointed Gold Coast Knights Head Coach

Gold Coast Knights have appointed former Socceroos forward, Scott McDonald as the club’s new Head Coach for the 2022 NPL Queensland season.

The 38-year-old takes up his first coaching gig, having most recently played for Western Sydney Wanderers whom he departed at the conclusion of the 2020/21 A-League season.

Capped 26 times for the Socceroos, Mcdonald plied his trade in the UK for the likes of Southampton, Bournemouth, Celtic, Middlesbrough and Milwall.

Mcdonald returned to Australia in 2019, wrapping up his playing career in the A-League with Western United, Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney.

McDonald takes the reigns at Knights from Adem Poric, who stepped down as Knights Head Coach in July, interim coach Max Wragg will remain at the helm through to the end of the 2021 season,

Knights who’s squad is headlined by former Socceroo, Mitch Nichols currently sit second on the NPL Queensland ladder with the league set to return from a COVID enforced shutdown this weekend.

The 2019 NPL Queensland Champions are also scheduled to play Edge Hill United in the FFA Cup Round of 32.

McDonald has confirmed his retirement from playing and will be involved at Knights purely in a coaching capacity.
