Crofts and Foletta join Canberra United squad

NPLW NSW duo Ashlie Crofts and Isabella Foletta will join forces at Canberra United for the Westfield W-League 2020/21 season.

The attack-minded Crofts returns to Canberra United after impressing in her nine appearances in her debut Westfield W-League campaign for the club last season - including scoring on her starting debut for the Canberrans.

She then carried her form into the NPLW NSW season with Blacktown Spartans, where she scored seven goals in 11 matches to help them to a fifth-placed finish.

By contrast, defensive utility Foletta is set for her first campaign with the Westfield W-League club after two prior seasons with hometown club, Perth Glory, where she made just a single appearance last year due to hip injury.

The 20-year-old's move to the green machine comes after a successful season with NPL NSW Semi Finalists Northern Tigers where she notched four clean sheets in a dozen appearances in the backline.

Foletta told canberraunited.com.au that she is ready to get down to work under new United coach Vicki Linton.

"I'm really excited that a season is going ahead and to be back at Canberra United," Crofts said.

"I can't wait to get stuck into it and get started. I am looking forward to getting to know the new girls and getting to know Vicki and her coaching style.

"I'm also pretty excited to play in front of the Canberra United fans, which was definitely a standout from last year, so I am excited to do that again."

Foletta is also looking forward to the challenge of her first Westfield W-League season with the capital club.

"I am so excited about the new opportunity to work alongside Vicki and players that I haven't played with before so I'm keen for a new challenge," Foletta said.

"I have had a really great time with Glory for the past couple of years and I absolutely loved it, but I am ready for a change and a new opportunity."

Linton said she expects both players are important additions to her squad as she seeked to return United to the Westfield W-League Finals Series for the first time since their Premiership win in 2016/17.

“Ash is a goal-scoring forward and I am looking forward to seeing her to add value to the team in that area and to continue to develop her game in her second year for Canberra," Linton said.

“Izzy joins us from Perth this season with two years of Westfield W-League experience. She is a fairly versatile player and has continued her development by playing in the Sydney NPL.

“It will be good to see her in training and see how she will fit into our style of play.”
