Baysie back on track in NPL WA

NPL WA leaders Bayswater City returned to winning ways with goals from David Heagney and Todd Howarth sealing a 2-0 victory over Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday.

NPL WA leaders Bayswater City returned to winning ways with goals from David Heagney and Todd Howarth sealing a 2-0 victory over Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday.

Bayswater-s 100 per cent record was ended by Sorrento last week but order was quickly restored as Chris Coyne-s side notched their 11th win of the season to maintain their seven-point lead at the summit of the competition.

Coyne-s assistant Stewart Moses acknowledged squad depth had been key to Bayswater-s success in the first half of the season.

“We-ve got a rotation system at the moment with the players and when they do step in they do a job for us,” he said.

Perth SC stayed second on the table with a 3-1 victory over Perth Glory in the inaugural Gareth Naven Cup at Dorrien Gardens.

The match was given “cup” status to honour Naven, who was both Perth Glory and Perth SC captain during his playing days before turning his hand to coaching.

Joe Knowles gave the Glory youngsters a surprise lead but the home side were level on the half hour through Ashley Rosindale. The comeback was completed through goals from Aden da Luz and Matt Milenkovic.

Inglewood United failed to make the most of their numerical advantage as they could only draw 4-4 against Floreat Athena at Intiga Stadium.

Athena lost goalkeeper Tom Dixon to a red card after just four minutes and reserve keeper Michael Woolcott-s first job was to pick the ball out of the net as Ryan Clarke scored from the resulting penalty.

But Floreat showed bags of resilience to draw level through Bobby Wilson and again thanks to Jack Allen after Scott Blackmore had edged Inglewood ahead for a second time.

Second-half goals from Teeboy Kamara and David Sesay appeared to have put the match out of Floreat-s reach but Lewis McMahon halved the deficit before James Eames grabbed an 85th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot.

At Grindleford Reserve, Balcatta emphasised their quality with a stunning 5-0 thrashing of Sorrento.

Alex Caniglia scored in the opening minute and Sorrento were dealt a further blow when defender Danny Cain was sent off on the stroke of time.

Lawrence Shuruma, making his Balcatta debut after signing from Glory, scored two second-half goals, while Kieron Stallard and Carlo Coelho also found the target in the rout.

In other games, Stirling Lions came from behind to beat bottom of the table Subiaco, 3-1, and ECU Joondalup won by the same score away to Cockburn City.
